OUR HISTORY
The Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Toledo has a rich and significant history that began on Sunday, September 21, 1968. On that day, a group of 42 faithful and God-dependent individuals gathered at Spring Street Baptist Church with the intention of establishing a new union. This dedicated group of believers named themselves "The Southern Missionary Baptist Church" and embarked on a journey of faith and service.
At the helm of this newly formed church was Reverend W. A. Emery, who was dedicated to leading and guiding the organization during its formative years. Under his leadership, the Southern Missionary Baptist Church held its first service, which followed the traditional Baptist format. This inaugural service marked the beginning of a vibrant and dynamic congregation that would go on to impact the community in significant ways.
The Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Toledo, since its inception, has been committed to serving both its members and the broader community. The church has consistently sought to fulfill its mission of spreading the Gospel and embodying the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through worship services, prayer gatherings, and engaging sermons, the church has provided a place for spiritual nourishment and growth for its members.
In addition to its focus on spiritual development, the Southern Missionary Baptist Church has actively engaged in various community outreach initiatives. These efforts have included hosting food drives to combat hunger, organizing clothing donations for those in need, and participating in community clean-up events to enhance the local environment. By partnering with local organizations and addressing social issues, the church has been a beacon of hope and support for the community.
Furthermore, the church has prioritized education and spiritual growth. Sunday school classes and prayer lines have been established to equip individuals with a deeper understanding of the Bible and to encourage personal growth in faith. These spiritual opportunities have provided a space for learning, discussion, and the development of a strong spiritual foundation.
Throughout its history, the Southern Missionary Baptist Church has fostered a sense of fellowship and community among its members. Social events, gatherings, and small groups have been organized to promote connection, support, and friendship within the church family. These activities have created a warm and welcoming environment where individuals can form meaningful relationships and find support in their spiritual journey.
